What is fall detection, and how does it work?

Four different technologies all sell themselves as "fall detection," and they work in genuinely different ways. This guide explains each one, what happens after a fall is detected, and what to weigh when choosing for a parent.

What is fall detection?

Fall detection is any system that notices a fall and gets help moving without the person who fell having to do anything. That last clause is the whole point. The classic medical alert button already exists for falls; what it can't cover is the fall where your parent is unconscious, disoriented, or simply not wearing it. Detection exists for exactly those moments.

Why it matters is a numbers question: the CDC reports that more than one in four adults over 65 falls each year, and falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries. After a fall, the time spent waiting for help is a large part of what decides how bad the outcome is.

How does each technology detect a fall?

Four approaches, four different mechanisms:

  • Pendants with automatic detection carry an accelerometer that looks for the sharp motion signature of a fall, plus a button as backup. They work anywhere your parent goes, but only while worn, and many end up on the nightstand or the counter.
  • Smartwatches use the same accelerometer approach with extra sensors. Same catch, plus daily charging, which is one more thing to forget.
  • Camera systems run computer vision on a live video feed to recognize a person going down. Nothing to wear, but your parent is on camera all day, and the rooms where cameras are unacceptable, like the bathroom, stay uncovered.
  • Radar sensors read reflected radio waves to track position and movement in the room, so a fall is recognized by how a body actually moves, without producing any image. Nothing to wear, works in full darkness and in the bathroom.

The alert is the product

Detection only matters because of what it triggers: the right people finding out fast. When comparing systems, ask who gets alerted, in what order, and what happens when nobody answers.

What happens when a fall is detected?

The chain is broadly the same across systems: the device flags a probable fall, there's usually a short window to cancel a false alarm, then alerts go out. Where systems differ is the destination. Some route to a paid monitoring center that calls your parent, then you, then emergency services. Others alert the family directly through an app, and you decide what happens next.

Neither is universally better. A monitoring center suits a parent who is alone most of the time with no family nearby; direct family alerts suit families who are reachable and want to verify before escalating. What matters is that you know which model you're buying, because it changes who moves first in an emergency.

How accurate is fall detection?

No fall detection system is perfect. Anyone selling 100% is selling. Real systems miss some falls and occasionally flag things that aren't falls, and each technology has its own failure modes: pendants miss slow slides from a chair, watches misread hard sits, cameras lose falls behind furniture, radar can be challenged by very active pets close to people.

Two honest questions to put to any vendor: what does the system do to keep improving detection in real homes, and how are false alerts handled? A system whose false alarms are cheap to verify, a quick look at the app rather than an ambulance dispatch, is a system a family keeps using.

Where the usual devices fall short

Talk to families who have already tried the common options, and the same three gaps come up again and again:

  • The watch that misses the fall. Apple Watch fall detection is real, but families report buying one specifically for it and then having it not fire during an actual fall. A safety device that only sometimes catches the emergency isn't one you can lean on.
  • The pendant nobody's wearing. Every wearable shares one failure mode: it only works when it's on. The story families tell is the parent who gets up in the night without it. If they fall then, no one knows until someone checks in the morning.
  • The basic plan that quietly underdelivers. The entry tier of a medical-alert service often does less than families expected, sending them back to shop all over again.

The thread running through all three: the protection depends on your parent remembering, wearing, and charging something, at exactly the moments (night, disorientation, a hard fall) when they are least able to. That is the gap a contactless, always-on sensor is built to close.

How do you choose?

Start from your parent, not the spec sheet:

  • Will they wear it, every day, including at night? If yes, a pendant or watch is the simple answer and works outside the home too. If no, and this is the most common failure, you need something in the home that works automatically.
  • Will they accept a camera? Many parents won't, and the bathroom stays uncovered regardless. If privacy is the line, radar is the automatic option that doesn't cross it.
